SHINE THE LIGHT~Violence & Bullying Prevention Program

SHINE THE LIGHT is a metaphor for shining the light on one of the most serious issues existing in school today…bullying, the bully and the victimized. This unique program offers an opportunity for teachers to select students to be a part of the presentation, as well as the audience being participatory throughout. Hands-on workshops are available for faculty members offering effective, in-depth strategies and curriculums dealing with violence and bullying in schools that are culturally and age specific.

SHINE THE LIGHT includes original film shorts of students of varied schools, from elementary through high school who explain bullying, the importance of being a good friend and becoming Kids Who Care; cartoons on bullying, skits enacted by the students, music, dance…and even a surprise character to help further the important messages.

Although the program exemplifies all aspects of bullying, SHINE THE LIGHT reveals an exceptional educational and extremely creative method in which material unfolds making for a most positive, stimulating, and memorable way to internalize the information imparted and the entire experience.

SHINE THE LIGHT~Violence & Bullying Preventative Program was developed and written by Hafiz Farid, Award Winning Film Director and Founder and Executive Director of NoCane Inc, Shelley Grodner Seidenstein, Award Winning Executive Producer and Educational Consultant/Writer and Richard Woods, Film Editor and Award Winning Producer.

The Heart and Mind Revealed
Through Camera’s Eye
Documentary Filmmaking
A Hands-On Workshop for Youth Ages 11 to 19

The Heart and Mind Revealed Through Camera's Eye students share
their experiences about the anatomy of the camcorder and filmmaking.

Objective:
Students working as a collaborative to create a documentary film.

Through developing a social consciousness, students become recorders of reality and are presented the skills to create documentaries. Creating documentaries is an enormous challenge. It requires that students understand the issue, its complexity and the many perspectives through which people view the subject.
Students, as Teams, will create three minutes each of a documentary on a topic of the student's choice. They will be challenged to understand their theme from a variety of perspectives and will have to represent those realities accurately through video. It is the responsibility of the students to convey to the viewers their perspectives through carefully written scripts, chosen photos, video clips and interviews. During the final class, a screening followed by a Q&A, led by the students, will be held.

Curriculum:
Students are encouraged to carefully select the subject of their documentary and develop footage that supports their position. Interviews will be incorporated based on the message the students desire to convey.

The students have a commitment to represent reality with accuracy. It becomes quite apparent that in our society permitting the truth to be known is difficult to achieve. Through this program our youth receive the wisdom and tools to raise a social consciousness that can make a difference for humanity and our planet.

The ultimate vision of the curriculum is to develop and expand the recognition of one's own self-value, talents and possibilities and to bridge communications between family and community.

THE G.A.P. INITIATIVE

Founding and Executive Director of NoCane Inc and the G.A.P. Initiative, Hafiz Farid,
addresses high school students on the topic of gang alternatives and developing self-value.

The G.A.P. Initiative  (Gang Alternative Program) is an educational and motivational program developed specifically to deal with the pervasive gang culture affecting our society today. G.A.P. is a Culturally Specific Program that is based on extensive research on the deep ethnic, cultural and historical roots of the various gangs that dominate our communities. Prevention and Intervention are two main aspects of the program.

The project emphasis will be on providing mentors and strong role models to help bridge the intergenerational gap that exists among America's youth and adults. The G.A.P. Initiative seeks to build self awareness, self esteem and self reliance, to explore the historical roots of gang culture, to inform youth of the legal consequences of criminal behavior, to demystify and de-glorify gang culture.

Our goal is to increase literacy, to teach social illiteracy, to discourage drug use and drug dealing. A special emphasis is placed on teaching life skills, enhancing entrepreneurial techniques and training in technology to prepare youth for the modern workplace. The following is a list subjects addressed in the workshops that G.A.P. will address in our initiative:

Cultural Identity
Illiteracy
Social Illiteracy
Anger Management
Youth Suicide
Ethnic Tensions
Violence as Power
Gang History in America and abroad
Life skills
Crime and Punishments
Alternatives to Gangs
Street to Industry (entrepreneurial workshop)

NoCane’s founder and Executive Director Hafiz Farid developed the concept for this initiative. NoCane has been providing services for at-risk youth in our community for over 20 years. Dr. Lenworth Gunther, Ph.D., Professor of History, is the G.A.P. Initiative's special consultant and is a world-renowned author, lecturer, educator and curriculum specialist.

The G.A.P. Initiative Illuminates
Forgotten Stained Glass Window
at
Newark's Barringer High School

The G.A.P. Initiative (Gang Alternative Project) through the nonprofit organization, NoCane, Inc., responded immediately to the voices of students at Barringer High School in Newark. Hafiz Farid, Founder and Executive Director of NoCane, Inc. organized the long overdue project of bringing life through illumination to the outstandingly beautiful Forgotten Stained Glass Window of a most sacred scene of Native American elders passing down the wisdom to their youth. For over 50 years, this remarkable artwork by the internationally acclaimed artist,?Burroughs, has remained in darkness.

”In many ways, we all have a special relationship with Native Americans, regardless of our ethnicity. Our history is inextricably tied to this proud and ancient people. The original inhabitants of this land have much to teach us, and we have much to learn from them, perhaps this is why this incredible artwork was chosen to adorn the entrance of these hallowed halls. We believe that we owe a debt of gratitude to those students who lost their lives in the pursuit of education and enlightenment,” explained, Mr. Farid.

Mr. Farid first learned of the moving history of the stained glass window from an article written by senior Ola Ovoje in the school' newspaper, Acropolis News. With the support of Principal Ms. Carmen Ruiz, Vice Principal Gregory Feehan, Art Teacher Sal Di Gerlando, Pat Restaino, President of Barringer's Alumni Association and former principal, faculty members, staff, and eager students, the vision became a reality in a very short time because of the GA.P. Initiative.

On February 19, 1903 at about 8:45am more than 120 passengers, mostly Newark High School (presently, Barringer High School) students, were boarded on a trolley, which collided with a speeding train while people watched in horror. Nine Newark High School students were killed. Then in 1903 the selected artist created an art piece in memory of those nine students who had died. When it was completed, the beautiful sacred stained glass panel was hung in Newark High School's entrance. And the lights illuminated its essence.

The G. A. P. Initiative offers students of all ages an appropriate in-depth curriculum and workshops dealing with gang awareness, education and alternatives. Hafiz Farid shared, “Our approach to dealing with the present pathology of gang culture, drugs and violence has always been to present a culturally specific program that explores the ethnic, social and cultural aspects of the groups we seek to mentor.”
